HELP FOR HAITIAN ORPHANS

Even before Tuesday's magnitude 7.0 earthquake, Haiti, one of the world's poorest countries, was awash in orphans, with 380,000 children living in orphanages or group homes, the United Nations Children's Fund said. Orphanages that were operating in Haiti before the earthquake are scrambling to keep their kids safe, sheltered and fed.

Now, the earthquake has created tens of thousands of new orphans, so many that officials won't venture a number. With so many buildings destroyed and growing chaos in the capital, it is conceivable that many children are alone. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced a humanitarian parole policy that allows orphaned Haitian children into the U.S. temporarily on a case-by-case basis, so they can receive the care they need. But only a handful of orphans are leaving the country.

Food for Orphans has identified a responsible organization that is working with the orphans in Haiti. They have been in Haiti caring for orphans for over 15 years, and run some of the best orphanges there. But the earthquake has destroyed the homes. All of their orphans are alive, but without food and water, they have little chance to survive. The caregivers have moved all of them to a building 40 miles outside of Port-au-Prince, but there is still no food or water there.
